World OCR Group announces that European Union trade mark protection for the OCR, OCRATHLON and WORLD OCR word marks has been finalised and secured in relevant sport, event, education, training, broadcasting, promotion and competition-related service classes across the European Union.
The protected service categories include, among others, the promotion of sports competitions and events, broadcasting services relating to sporting events, education and training, the organisation of sporting events and competitions, officiating, timing, sport information and related sporting services.
As the international federation responsible for the governance of the standalone sports of OCR and OCRATHLON, World OCR emphasises that while “obstacle sports” and “obstacle course racing” may be used descriptively to refer to a broad field of sporting activity, the OCR, OCRATHLON and WORLD OCR word marks are protected sport identifiers and trade marks associated with the organised sport system governed by World OCR.
Accordingly, in the absence of a signed written agreement, licence, cooperation agreement or Memorandum of Understanding with World OCR or its authorised partners, any commercial use of OCR as a direct or indirect sporting event label, discipline identifier, sanctioning reference, federation reference, competition title, promotional term, broadcasting label, training service, timing service, domain name or other public-facing identifier will be treated as unauthorised.
World OCR will enforce its rights against such unauthorised use, including by seeking the correction, withdrawal, suspension or cessation of the unauthorised promotion, presentation, communication or operation of any event, competition or related activity under the protected OCR word mark.
This communication is made for clarity and is intended to inform athletes, organisers, sponsors, venues, media partners, public authorities and consumers, and to prevent confusion regarding the identity, governance, sanctioning and accountability of organised sport events and related services.
World OCR Group will actively monitor the use of OCR, OCRATHLON and WORLD OCR throughout the European Union and will take appropriate action where unauthorised use, misleading association, dilution or attempted circumvention of these protected marks is identified in relation to sporting events, competitions or related commercial services.
World OCR remains open to cooperation with responsible organisers, national bodies, event owners, broadcasters, sponsors, venues and public authorities who wish to operate transparently and in accordance with recognised sport-governance, safety and licensing standards.
